One server. Every voice. · Discord + IRC
Say what you think.
Argue like you mean it.
#talk is a place to talk about anything, with people who attack ideas instead of each other. Bring your views, especially the unpopular ones.
Free · English · No topic is off-limits

Hot take: remote work made us worse at disagreeing well.

Disagree, but steelman first: fewer hallway chats means fewer low-stakes arguments to practise on?
- ana
That's exactly it. Okay, now hit me 😄
- kuba
Text makes people finish their argument instead of interrupting. Source incoming…

What #talk stands for
Few rules, one principle: say what you think, respect the person.
No forbidden topics
Politics, religion, tech, science, sex, conspiracies, the questions people avoid at dinner. If you can discuss it in good faith, you can discuss it here.
Ideas, not people
Hit an argument as hard as you like. Insulting, mocking or dogpiling the person behind it is the one thing that gets moderated.
Good faith first
Steelman before you rebut. Ask before you assume. Sources beat volume, and changing your mind counts as a win.
Safe to disagree
Holding an unpopular view is not a crime here. Moderators act on behaviour, never on opinions.
Inside the server
Small on purpose: a few rooms that each have a clear job. Subjects are forum tags, not a hundred channels.
- #talkLive chat
The main room, always on and bridged with IRC.
- #discussionsForum
Long-form threads, one topic per post, tagged by subject.
- #debatesForum
A motion, two sides, timed rounds and a vote on the best argument.
- #topic-of-the-dayDaily
One question every day. Answer in its thread, suggest the next one.
- Debate StageVoice
Live voice debates and talks, with an audience.
- #shareLinks
Articles, papers and videos worth arguing about.
Topic of the Day
“Is it ever right to stay quiet about something you believe is true?”
A new question lands in #topic-of-the-day every day. Members suggest and vote on the next ones.
Answer it on DiscordThe rules, in short
- Attack arguments, never people.
- No topic is off-limits. Context and tone matter.
- Disagreement isn't harassment, and harassment isn't disagreement.
- Good faith first. Steelman before you rebut.
- Safety lines: no doxxing, threats or illegal content.
How moderation works
- 1Reminder
- 2Warning
- 3Timeout
- 4Ban
Applied to behaviour only. Never to opinions.
Old school? We're on IRC too.
#talk on Libera.Chat is where #talk started. It is bridged with the Discord #talk room, so messages flow both ways.

What is #talk?
An open discussion community on Discord and IRC. People talk about anything, from politics and philosophy to tech and everyday life, and test their views against each other in good faith.
Is there anything I am not allowed to talk about?
Topics are not restricted. Behaviour is: no personal attacks, harassment, doxxing, threats, spam or illegal content. Graphic or NSFW material only where a channel allows it.
Will I be banned for unpopular opinions?
No. Moderators moderate how people act, not what they believe. Disagreement is the point of the place.
What language is used?
English is the main language so everyone can follow. More languages may come later.
Do I need IRC to join?
No. Discord is the main home. If you prefer IRC, join #talk on Libera.Chat. The channel is bridged with Discord, so both sides see each other.
Is it free?
Yes. No paid tiers, no ads.
